Keynote Lecture 1: Smart Antennas for Space-Borne Synthetic Aperture Radars

 

Steven Gao

University of Kent, UK

Steven Gao is Chair of RF and Microwave Engineering at University of Kent, UK. He is an IEEE AP-S Distinguished Lecturer (2014-2016). He is a General Co-Chair of LAPC’2013, UK, an Invited Speaker at IWAT'2014 (Sydney, 2014), SOMIRES'2013 (Japan, 2013), APCAP'2014 (China, 2014), etc. He is a Guest Editor of IEEE Trans. on Antennas and Propagation for a Special Issue on "Antennas for Satellite Communication"(Feb. 2015 issue), an Associate Editor of Radio Science (US), and the Editor-in-Chief for Wiley Book Series on "Microwave and Wireless Technologies". He is a Fellow of IET, UK. He has two books including “Space Antenna Handbook” (Wiley, 2012) and “Circularly Polarized Antennas” (Wiley-IEEE, 2014), over 200 technical papers and several patents. He received "URSI Young Scientist Award", 2002, "JSPS Fellowship Award", Japan, 2005, “Best Paper Award”, LAPC, 2012, JSPS Award, Japan, 2013, etc. His main areas of expertise are in antennas, satellite antennas, smart antennas, phased arrays, RF/microwave/millimetre-wave circuits and RF front ends, satellite communications, inter-satellite wireless links, GPS antennas and reflectometry, synthetic-aperture radars, remote sensing, UWB radars, satellite networks and small satellites.

 

Keynote Lecture 2: Multiscale Computational Electromagnetics for Applications in Subsurface Sensing, Microwaves, and Nanophotonics

 

Qing Huo Liu

Duke University, USA

Qing Huo Liu received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from Xiamen University in 1983 and 1986, respectively, and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1989. His research interests include computational electromagnetics and acoustics, and their applications in inverse problems, geophysics, nanophotonics, and biomedical imaging. He has published over 230 refereed journal papers and 300 conference papers in conference proceedings. His H index is 42 and has been cited over 7000 times (Google Scholar). He was with the Electromagnetics Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Research Assistant from September 1986 to December 1988, and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate from January 1989 to February 1990. He was a Research Scientist and Program Leader with Schlumberger-Doll Research, Ridgefield, CT from 1990 to 1995. From 1996 to May 1999 he was an Associate Professor with New Mexico State University. Since June 1999 he has been with Duke University where he is now a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Liu is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Currently he serves as the Deputy Editor in Chief of Progress in Electromagnetics Research, an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, and an Editor for the Journal of Computational Acoustics. He was recently a Guest Editor in Chief of the Proceedings of the IEEE for a 2013 special issue on large-scale electromagnetics computation and applications. He received the 1996 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from the White House, the 1996 Early Career Research Award from the Environmental Protection Agency, and the 1997 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation.

 

Keynote Lecture 3: Radiation control of electrically small antenna using superdirectivity 

 

Ala Sharaiha

University of  Rennes 1, France

Ala Sharaiha received the Ph.D. and Habilitation à Diriger la Recherche (HDR) degrees in telecommunication from the University of Rennes 1, France, in 1990 and 2001 respectively. Currently, he is a Full Professor at the University of  Rennes 1, Rennes, France and the Co-Head of the ‘Complex Radiation Systems” Team in the ‘Antennas and Microwave Devices’ Department.  His main research activities include small antennas, broadband and UWB antennas, reconfigurable antennas, printed spiral and helical antennas, antennas for mobile communications, etc. Conducted and involved in more than 20 industrial and collaborative projects.   Prof. Sharaiha has published more than 280 journal and conference papers, concerning antenna theory, analysis, design and measurements, and he holds 12 patents. His published works have been cited over 600 times in Google Scholar. He has graduated/mentored over 20 Ph.D. students/post-docs, and co-authored with them.  He is presently a member of the European School of Antennas Board and a member of the small antennas working group of the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EuRAAP). He is a senior member of the IEEE and is a reviewer for the IEEE APS, IEEE AWPL, the IET Letters and the IET Microwave Antennas Propagation. He was the conference Chairman of the 11th International Canadian Conference ANTEM (Antenna Technology and Applied Electro- Magnetics), held at Saint-Malo in France, 2005.

 

Keynote Lecture 4: Common-mode Filter for EMC Design in 10+Gbps High-speed Circuits: A story from academic research to industrial application

 

Tzong-Lin Wu

National Taiwan University, Taiwan

Tzong-Lin Wu, IEEE Fellow, received the B.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from National Taiwan University (NTU), in 1991 and 1995, respectively. From 1995 to 1996, Tzong-Lin was a Senior Engineer at Micro-electronics Technology Inc., in Hsinchu, Taiwan. In 1996, after receiving his Ph.D. degree, he joined the Central Research Institute of the Tatung Company, Taipei, Taiwan, where he was involved in the analysis and measurement of electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference (EMC/EMI) problems of high-speed digital systems. In 1998, he decided in favor of an academic career and accepted a position at the Electrical Engineering Department, National Sun Yat-Sen University. Since 2005, he has been a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering (GICE), NTU. His research interests include EMC/EMI and signal/power integrity design for high-speed digital/optical systems. Tzong-Lin was appointed as the Director of the GICE and Communication Research Center in NTU on Aug. 1, 2012. GICE is among the best institutes in Taiwan with 41 faculy members and about 450 graudaute students, where over 30% of the professors are Fellows of the IEEE. The research direction of GICE includes EM wave, communication, and multimedia. Tzong-Lin received the Excellent Research Award and the Excellent Advisor Award from National Sun Yat-Sen University in 2000 and 2003, respectively, the Outstanding Young Engineers Award from the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineers in 2002, and the Wu Ta-You Memorial Award from the National Science Council (NSC) in 2005, Outstanding Research Award from NSC in 2010, and the IEEE Transactions on Advanced Packagings Best Paper Award in 2011. He has served as the Chair of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) Taipei Section in 2007-2011, the Treasurer of the IEEE Taipei Section in 2007-2008, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the IEEE Taipei Section in 2009-2010. He served the IEEE EMC Society as a Distinguished Lecturer for the period 2008–2009. He was Co-Chair of the 2007 IEEE Electrical Design of Advanced Packaging and Systems (EDAPS) workshop, Chair of the 2008 International workshop on EMC, and Technical Program Chair of the 2010 and 2012 IEEE EDAPS Symposiums. Since 2006, he has been the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Electrical Engineering. He is also Associate Editor of IEEE T-EMC.
